The Douro Valley produces more than sixty percent of Portugal's port wine, yet fewer than half the terraced vineyards are accessible by paved road.
The valley's demarcated wine region, established in 1756 under the rule of the Marquês de Pombal, is the oldest regulated wine appellation in the world—predating Bordeaux's classification by a century. The river itself was once the only route: flat-bottomed rabelo boats carried oak casks downstream to the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, and until the 1960s the journey took two days under sail. Others include lunch at a quinta, where grilled chorizo, olive oil from estate groves, and bread baked in wood-fired ovens accompany the tastings. The valley's light is sharp and unfiltered, especially in autumn when the vine leaves turn copper and the river reflects the terraces in still water. The region remains working agricultural land; harvest occurs in September, and during vindima the scent of fermenting grapes drifts across the valley. The tours are structured around the quintas' opening hours, which run from nine in the morning until six in the evening throughout the week, and access to the region itself is free, though each estate charges separately for guided visits and tastings.
